Summary

The the Manufacture royale d’imprimerie – descirbed as the Kings Printing house by Evelyn – was founded by Cardinal Richelieu in 1640.  The official reason behind the creation of the press was as a means of ‘multiplying beautiful publications promoting the glory of the king’, more importantly it gave the King and his state early oversight of publications.

Today it is known as the “Imprimerie Nationale” and is one of the largest printing presses in France.
