Simon Zaharias (Zacharias?), ship’s pilot

“Zacharias“ – described by John Evelyn as the survivor of a shipwreck- is probably Simon Zaharias.  Simon was a ship’s pilot shipwrecked off the Swan islands (Honduras) in 1610 or 1611.  His story is similar to that recounted by Evelyn as he apparently also built a ship from the remains of the shipwreck to make his escape.

One difference is that Evelyn describes Zacharias as English whereas this Zaharias is described as Flemish.
