Summary

A cryptically named German architect of the Campanile or Leaning Tower of Pisa.

He states:

“The Campanile, or Settezonio, built by John Venipont, a German, consists of several orders of pillars, thirty in a row, designed to be much higher.”

Some authors ((See Source: “The Cathedral Builders: The Story of a Great Masonic Guild” By Leader Scott)) have this architect named as “Giovanni Tedesco” – i.e John German or “Giovanni d’Innspruck” – John of Innsbruck.  Given that the ancient name for Innsbruck is “Oenipons”, I think Evelyn was was using an Anglicised form of this architect’s name. . —GS
